Trabajo en Nueva York 1/Working in new York 1

Me dijero...

Have you seen dthe dog? Where do you think the dog is?"

This is the first summary of how work has been for me in the Big Apple since I arrived here. I’ll start from the beginning.

First I arrived and had an interview on the third day of my stay here. I had some courses in the morning, so I headed for the course before the interview. I was so professional and beautiful. And on my way to the course, one of my shoe’s high heel broke. I know, it only happens in films…So I tried to fix it buying some glue and fixing it, but it didn’t work. I just got my hands covered with glue. So I was told “ There is a very cheap shoe-shop round the corner” I got there and it was closed. And I had to print a CV too, because I had changed it. So there I was somewhere in Manhattan trying to look for a shop to print things and some cobblers. Finally I found everything, but I had been given the wrong directions. So I ended up in 125th and Amsterdam, instead of number 125th in Amsterdam street…this is to say… fucking miles away. Of course, I did not even know where I was, so I called my brother in Spain for directions….and finally I got there. Needless to say, I never got that job.

Then, as I did not have a job, I became a susbstitute teacher. But on the first days there were no sbutitutions to attend, and we were taken to the rubber room, the room where all the teachers that can not teach for any reason are. And we had to be there without going anywhere during the day. Once I asked if I could go for a coffee, and they said “ Well.. you have to be here” But I was there there doing nothing. However, I was paid for being there.

Then they found a job for me, and I was really happy, but it happened to be in a primary school to teach seven years old. And I was tehre with a techer reding tales for two days “ Have you seen the dog? Where is the dog? “

I am not a particularly a child person, and there I was, scared, having to teach science, maths and everything. And I got an interview. I get there, everything fine and then, in the middle of the interview, it is a job to teach Spanish and not English.I say, ok. I’ll get it. And the principal in the interview telling me that his father was Catalan, and I saying “Oh... Cataluna... what a wonderful place”, and he telling me he had seen Joaquin Cortes in Madrid, and I saying “ Oh how wonderful Joaquin Cortes”... and I got the job

Finally, I have to fix my licence, I am allowed to get the job, I am going to sign the contract, and after fighting burocracy for three days, at the moment of signing, I am told my fingerprints are not cleared, and I can not even go to school. And me thingking...those clever people at the Department of Education that have taken my fingerprints twice already, and they are not clear yet. If it is the bloke of CSI, the one that gives the glass to the murderer to get their fingeprints, they would not catch one single criminal.. not one...Useless ....

And this is how I got to work in this beautiful High School, Bayard Rustin Educational Complex
